It’s time to start salivating – Hot Press has been to Marlay Park to scope out what Longitude 2015 looks like before it get bombarded by eager punters. Worth a look if you are heading there this weekend! Sweet.
Excited? Well you should be! With the season being royally kicked off by Vantastival this bank holiday weekend, and a stellar lineup to boot, get prepared before you head off!
In 2010 I was bulk buying essentials in preparation for Oxegen. I had a short list but kept on getting sidetracked by other things I thought I would need. In the baby wipe section (essential!!!!) I found a folded piece of paper. When I opened it my heart skipped a beat! Someone, a girl, had left behind a very detailed and list for her trip to Oxegen.
I looked at hers (back to back, and handwritten no less), looked at mine, then decided to mostly go with hers! For the most part anyway.
And it was a wet one – glad I was prepared!
So check the list below, print it out and get prepared for the ample amount of up coming music festivals. You can’t go wrong with it really, especially if you are a girl, or a guy who likes to wear girls clothes to a festival.
Share this to make sure everyone is prepared for music festivals and they don’t forget anything – particularly the ‘obvious’ section.
I’m sure the Abner Browns Barbershop lads have something else up their sleeves for the night as this event takes on an organic life of its own. Well deserved too.
Imagine how good this actual festival will be, given that the launch party already rocks!
At only a fiver for entry, you’d be foolish to pass this up. Get ’em here.
One of the most exciting new independent music festivals this year in Dublin was forced to change its name due to a court application for an injunction. Harsh.
Not to worry! The now named Canalaphonic, the brainchild of the quirkiest barbershop in town, Abner Browns, is set to take place in the Rathmines/Portobello area.
The exciting new festival will be rock out 2 stages and 18 venues spread across the area – Interestingly, one of the stages will be a barge docked at Portobello Harbour, aptly called ‘The Making Waves Stage’ with local legends The Hot Sprockets and Mother Moochkicking off proceedings.
Did we mention that the gigs will be free and that the acts are actually earning a buck? Abner Browns Barbershop are proving that this event will be a cut above the rest!
More acts have yet to be announced, but there’s plenty of time for that as the event doesn’t take place until 8th and 9th May.
With the level of interest this event has gathered in just over two weeks and even a little bit of controversy, we continue to watch this space very closely indeed. And so should you.
Last night, the guys at Knockanstockan HQ broke the internet by revealing the first batch of defining artists that will rock the Ballyknockan district this coming July, and launched their new look website.
The lineup is, yet again, a fine example of the musical talent that Ireland has to offer.
And there are more announcements to come. The swanky new website boasts that there will be a total of 100 bands from across the globe. No mean feat we can assure you, and very impressive that these guys can pull this off every year given that it is a not for profit organisation run by volunteers with a passion for all things musical.
The lineup so far –
SYD ARTHUR, CULT CALLED MAN, RED ENEMY, KINGSTON, REBECCA COLLINS, LEO DREZDEN, CONTOUR, GASCAN RUCKUS, ROCSTRONG, ROBOCOBRA QUARTET, O EMPEROR, INTERSKALACTIC, TUCAN, NEW SECRET WEAPON, VERNON JANE, BUNOSCIONN, BUNK, MEGACONE, POCKETS, HECTOR BIZERK, THE WITCH TRIALS, MONGOOSE, MAMA KASBAH
Early bird tickets are going for a steal @ €65 each, but they’re going quick! Get ’em here while they’re hot!
Knockanstockan will reveal the next batch of live acts for 2015 later today, and throw a new website in to the party too.
So far we have been teased with an already impressive lineup of Kingston, Rebecca Collin, Leo Drezden, Contour, Cult Called Man, Red Enemy and Bitch Falcon.
The announcement was made here in a State of the Nation article where Bettine McMahon gives a brief history of the festival, as well as the prep needed beforehand. Well worth a read, and a great insight in to the fest – she knows her stuff!
We wait anxiously hitting the F5 button until the website goes live!
If you are heading to any of the smaller festivals this year, head here to listen to the Soundcloud playlists we’re putting together to get you prepared.
Alternatively, you can head straight to our Soundclud page to listen to the playlists, or even check out a few of our own hand-made podcasts. Enjoy.
One of our favourite acts from Vantastival 2012 was Cry Monster Cry – they had tweeted about leaving home without their guitar and needed one badly, so we knew we just had to catch their set and interview them!
Little did we know we would end up talking about the Mayan calendar, how the world was going to end in 2012, and where their name actually came from.
We’re glad to see Richie and Jamie’s world didn’t end in 2012, and they have since been on the up and up and are releasing their debut album ‘Rhythm of Dawn’ on March 6th.
Check out their current single ‘Postcards’ below.
Showcasing the upcoming album they have announced an Irish tour which sees them sending us postcards from all four corners of Ireland and heading back to Vantastival later this year – Even if they forget a guitar, their set is sure to be a good one. Mark your Mayan calendars people.
Vantastival has finally released the 2015 line up. And the happy campers who got their hands on the sold out early bird tickets are going to be very happy when they pitch their tents on May bank holiday weekend.
The independent festival has always been good to the Irish music scene showcasing such Irish gems as Fight Like Apes, The Hot Sprockets, And So I Watch You From Afar, and Damien Dempsey – pretty impressive to be fair.

As requested, we have converted our video podcasts to Soundcloud. This should make it a lot easier for people to access, download and listen to. We will be doing this with new podcasts from now on. If you still want to watch the videos, you can get them here.
Royal blood have had a great few months. Ever since their crowd packed show at Glastonbury 2014, the hype of the Brighton duo has gone from strength to strength.
One of my favourite tracks on the self titled debut album is the opener ‘Out of the Black’, which is now the latest single to be released. Does the artwork of the album remind anyone of a Bjork cover??
The video is NSFW, and flips over to animation a la Kill Bill style for the particularly violent parts. It works really well, and allows for more out of this world violence and great seedy animation.
If you have been living under a rock for the last few months and haven’t managed to hear anything from Royal Blood yet, maybe start off with their catchy and addictive Figure it Out.
The lads will hit our shores with their unique bass and drum sound on March 9th (sold out!) and 10th in the Olympia.
Wallis Bird has just announced a string of tour dates where she will be flying solo. The majority of the intimate solo gigs are based in Europe, with the exception of the one in May which will be held in Star Pine’s Cafe in Tokyo Japan! Looks like a nice little spot, enjoy the flight!
13.02. Berlin (GER) – Stadion an der Alten Försterei
19.03. Freiburg (GER) – Jazzhaus
20.03. Hartberg (AT) – Rittersaal
21.03. Wien (AT) – Haus der Musik
23.04. Osnabrück (GER) – Laboratorium
24.04. Moers (GER) – Bollwerk 107
26.04. Mühlheim (GER) – Schanz
30.05. Tokyo (JP) – Star Pine’s Café
Of course, if you can’t make it to Tokyo, or Europe for any of these gigs (shame on you!), you can grab wallis (not sure if it’s solo or not) at the Killarney Festival this June. Killarney Festival was previously the Wesport Festival, and this year will see the return of Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra among others.
The selection of festivals already announced for 2015 is staggering! It’s going to be a busy summer!
